Questions about donating gift cards with Gift Card Tank

We are anticipating lots of questions. So we wanted to post most of the questions that we answered during development.

What is Gift Card Tank?

Gift Card Tank is a service for non profits, churches, schools, teams, clubs, and political groups that facilitates accepting gift cards as donations.

When was Gift Card Tank started?

We officially launched on April 6th, 2016.

How does it work?

You register for an account and inform donors that they can donate gift cards. Donors fill out a form with the gift card details. We accept the gift cards, sell them, give you money, and provide a report for your treasurer or accountant.

How much does it cost?

Gift Card Tank is a free service. The are no monthly service charges and no setup fee. Gift Card Tank will retain a fee from the proceeds of each card which will cover expenses. This fee includes shipping, processing, and any additional fees incurred as part of the transaction. As well as keeping the service online and functional.

Where do you sell the gift cards?

We use many resources to obtain the highest value for every gift card donated. This also makes it complicated for us to provide a set fee as it can be higher or lower depending on the outlet.

How are payments sent?

We send all payments through PayPal. You will need an account. If this is a problem, let us know.

What about partial gift cards?

Yup, we accept those. As long as the value is greater than $10.00 we will accept the card.

What if it is a $100 gift card, but there is only $15.45 remaining?

As long as the value is greater than $10.00 we will accept the card.

What is store credit?

Store credit, sometimes also called merchandise credit, can be donated on Gift Card Tank. They are issued by a retailer and generally treated the same as a gift card.

What merchants are accepted?

We have a brand listing page that you can view. This will be updated as we add new brands.

What about a merchant that is not listed?

Email us at [email protected] and we will get them added.

Do you require the gift card to be mailed?

In most cases we will sell the gift card electronically and the gift card is never mailed. Some gift cards do require the card to be present for use. In these situations we inform the donor to mail the card to our processing center and handle delivery once the card has been sold.

Why should I, or my donors, trust you?

Our process is transparent to both you and your donor. When a gift card is donated an email is sent to inform both parties that the process has begun. And when a gift card has been sold we close the loop and inform both parties of the sale amount and proceeds.
